Founded in 1909, Louisville Visual Art (LVA) has shaped and sustained Greater Louisville’s creative identity for more than a century—championing artists, expanding access, and ensuring that art is a part of everyday life. Our mission is to contribute to a thriving, creative, and engaged community through youth art education, support for professional and emerging visual artists, and the integration of art into public spaces.

We envision a city where more art reaches more people in more places—where everyone, in every neighborhood, has the opportunity to experience, create, and be inspired by visual art. At LVA, we believe art is not a luxury, but a public good: essential to individual wellbeing, community connection, and a vibrant, equitable future.

Through our three pillars of impact—Youth Art Education, Artist Support and Development, and Public Art and Community Building—we invest in creativity at every level. Since 1925, our Children’s Fine Art Classes (CFAC) have nurtured generations of young people, equipping them with creative thinking skills that extend far beyond the classroom. We are committed to ensuring that every child has access to high-quality visual art education, regardless of background or circumstance.

We also believe that artists are vital to a thriving city. LVA provides meaningful financial and professional support to artists with the talent and drive to pursue creative careers—connecting them to resources, opportunities, and audiences through programs like Curate Purchase Inspire (CPI), Open Studio Weekend, the Artists Talk with LVA radio show, and ongoing calls for artists.

From our home in the Portland neighborhood and through deep community partnerships, we meet people where they are—bringing art into neighborhoods, co-creating programs, and placing artwork in public spaces across the city. We are committed to reducing barriers—financial, geographic, linguistic, and cultural—so that all people feel welcomed and empowered to engage.

Guided by our core values of integrity, growth, and inclusion, LVA works to build a culture of art appreciation that reflects and celebrates the full diversity of our community. By amplifying voices, fostering connection, and investing in creativity, we are helping Greater Louisville not just live—but thrive.
